Sacred Space
from Humble Beginnings

Learn about us!
Master Thich Bao Thanh is recognized as the Sixth successor of the Compassion Meditation Method, "That Bao Huyen Mon," originating from the Seven Spirit Mountains in Vietnam near the Cambodian border.

As the Abbot of Xa Loi Temple, he holds the lineage of this tradition, and those trained under his guidance—Monks, Nuns, and Hanh Su—who follow his teachings are authorized to teach at the Xa Loi Temple Meditation Center.

The Vision of Xa Loi Temple Meditation Center: Discovering the Beauty That is always there.

In 2001 the 33 acre overgrown and trash filled farmland was purchased. After ten years of remodeling the building and cleaning up the property, the Meditation Center was transformed into it's current beautiful state.

Practicing the teaching of the Buddha is learning how to see beyond what our senses are telling us.  Where other's may have just seen a delapidated building and trash filled land, Master Bao Thanh could see the beauty that existed there.  With the help of many volunteers, and the Master's determination, this  neglected space has become a sacred space. When we apply the Buddha's teaching to our lives, work hard, and remain committed, Just as the property has been transformed, we all can transform the world within and around us.

Beginning in the year of 2003, Venerable Thich Bao Thanh and a group of close students bought a 33 Acre farm in Frederick, Maryland USA. This farm was to be built and used as a Buddhist temple to teach meditation, spiritual practice and for community activities.

After 10 years of building, renovating, and clearing the land, the temple was finally opened to the public in 2013. Since then we have been blessed so much and are so happy to share this temple for all to come and enjoy. Every year we keep adding to the beauty of the temple grounds. Each time you visit you may find something new! We thank all the volunteers and donors over the years who help make this possible.
