Reclining Buddha

Picture
When you come across a Reclining Buddha statue, you can’t help but be struck by its sheer size and presence.

The elongated figure, often spanning several meters in length, exudes a sense of calmness and surrender. As you gaze upon the reclining Buddha, you may find yourself contemplating the fleeting nature of life and the importance of embracing impermanence.  It is said that an alms giver had accidentally given the Buddha pork that had gone bad, and this eventually led to the death of the Buddha.

Because the Buddha had gained enlightenment in this lifetime, the Buddha was able to escape the endless cycle of birth - death - rebirth (known as samsara) and was able to enter Nirvana.

Fun fact: in Pakistan, Bhamala Stupa contains a statue carbon dated to be 1,800 years old, making it the oldest reclining Buddha in the world.

The Reclining Buddha is a significant iconographic representation in Buddhist art, symbolizing the Buddha’s final moments before entering Parinirvana—the state beyond rebirth.
Symbolism and Meaning
  • The Reclining Buddha depicts Shakyamuni Buddha lying on his right side, with his head resting on his right hand.
  • This posture represents the Buddha’s passing into Nirvana, signifying peace, detachment, and liberation from suffering.
  • It is a reminder of the impermanence of life and the path to enlightenment.

Notable Reclining Buddha Statues
  • Wat Pho, Thailand – Home to one of the most famous gold-plated Reclining Buddha statues, measuring 46 meters long.
  • Gal Vihara, Sri Lanka – Features a 12th-century stone-carved Reclining Buddha.
  • Shwethalyaung Buddha, Myanmar – A 54.8-meter-long statue, considered one of the most revered in Myanmar.
  • Bhamala Stupa, Pakistan – Contains the oldest known Reclining Buddha statue, dating back 1,800 years.

The Reclining Buddha serves as a powerful spiritual symbol, reminding followers of the Buddha’s teachings on impermanence and enlightenment
