Maitreya/Laughing Buddha

The Laughing Buddha, also known as Budai or Hotei, is a Chinese folkloric figure often mistaken for Gautama Buddha. He is a symbol of happiness, prosperity, and abundance in Buddhist and Taoist traditions.

Who is the Laughing Buddha?
  • Budai was a Chinese monk who lived around the 10th century CE.
  • He is often depicted as a fat, bald man with a joyful expression, carrying a cloth sack filled with goodies.
  • His jolly nature and generosity made him beloved, and he became associated with Maitreya, the future Buddha

Symbolism and Meaning
  • His big belly represents contentment and abundance.
  • His laughing face symbolizes joy and fulfillment.
  • Many believe that rubbing his belly brings good luck and prosperity.
